In an effort to stop violence against women, V-Day Men, a component of V-Day Toronto 2007, will show their support in Strike a Chord…Not a Woman, a community benefit concert that will feature local indie favourites Kevin Fox and Royal Wood, among others.

On Saturday March 10th, Workman Theatre will host the V-Day Men benefit concert that will coincide with the forerunner V-Day performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues that took place March 4th at the Phoenix Concert Theatre.

“This concert will give men the opportunity to have a voice in this very important issue,” says Tanisha Taitt, Producer of V-Day Toronto 2007. “At the end of the day, violence against women will not stop until men stop it. I wanted to add an element to V-Day that celebrated the wonderful men that do exist and give them a chance to support our cause.”

On the bill at this year’s benefit concert include critically acclaimed singer-songwriters Kevin Fox, Brian MacMillan, Jory Nash, Jonathan Seet, Matt York and Royal Wood. Music will range from gentle folk, to ethereal alternative rock, to soulful pop.

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. It is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. The event generates broader attention to the fight to stop worldwide violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation and sexual slavery.

The Vagina Monologues features performances about real women and their testimonials about female sexuality. It was written by playwright Eve Ensler, who received an Obie-Award in 2001.

Ninety per cent of the proceeds from all shows will go to the Anduhyaun Residence, a shelter for abused Native women and children. The remaining proceeds go to the V-Day 2007 Global Spotlight, Women In War Zones, benefiting organizations that assist women affected by violence in the Sudan, Iraq and the Congo.

As always, V-Day would not be a success without the support of many generous sponsors. This year’s sponsors include: Isabella Hotel, Richard Dubois Photography, School of Hair & Makeup Art, NOW Magazine & NOW Lounge, Nestle, Labspace Studio, and the Harris Institute for the Arts.
