Poet, author and producer Dwayne Morgan hosts When Sisters Speak, featuring d’bi young, Naila Keleta Mae, Mahogany Browne and more

TORONTO: January 18, 2007

Following the success of the spoken word concert When Brothers Speak, Up From The Roots entertainment presents its female counterpart, When Sisters Speak, taking place on Saturday, January 20th, 2007 at the St. Lawrence Centre (27 Front St. E.).

Produced and hosted by spoken word artist Dwayne Morgan, When Sisters Speak is now in its seventh consecutive year. As the biggest and longest-running event of its kind in North America, it features performances by Toronto’s Naila Keleta Mae, d’bi young, New York’s Mahogany Browne, Miami’s Liz Straight and more. There will be a special dance presentation by Tamla Matthews.

Up From The Roots founder Dwayne Morgan has shared the stage with many of Canada’s top artists including Choclair, Glenn Lewis, Maestro, Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, K-OS, Nelly Furtado, and Saukrates, while also opening for international artists Alicia Keys, Mutabaruka, Ursula Rucker, Saul Williams, Les Nubians, Christian McBride, and author Colin Channer.

Beginning his career in 1993, Dwayne Morgan founded Up From The Roots entertainment, with the intention to promote the positive artistic contributions of African Canadian and urban influenced artists. He is also a motivational speaker, visiting schools across Ontario, helping youth create a positive future and to strive for their highest vision.

 

As an accomplished poet, Morgan’s fifth and most recent book, The Making Of A Man follows on the heels of The Man Behind The Mic, Long Overdue, and the chapbooks The Revolution Starts Within and Straight >From The Roots.

In collaboration with Driftwood Studios, Morgan filmed Three Knocks, a ten-minute film based on his domestic violence poem of the same name, which premiered at the 2006 ReelWorld Film Festival in Toronto.

Morgan is the host of Diasporic Music, a monthly spoken word show on CKLN 88.1 FM, while also serving as an advice columnist in the free daily paper, 24 Hours, and an occasional writer for Word Magazine.

Morgan has won the Canadian Urban Music Award for Best Spoken Word Recording in 2001, 2003 and 2005, as well as the Harry Jerome Award for Excellence in the Arts and the African-Canadian Achievement Award for Youth Achievement.
